The Rent

My Rent Cartoon

Some events that have taken place in my life in the last month have brought me to this cartoon. I’m working on a project with East District Family Resource Center of Richmond, as well as doing a mock poster for Habitat for Humanity. So I’ve been involved in a lot of thinking about shelter and community. One of the things that caught my eye was this:

Virginia LISC helped finance the acquisition of 106 units of affordable housing in Williamsburg that were at risk of being converted to market-rate.

Now normally I’m not the kind of person that would jump up and argue against something trending with the market. But my perspective has changed a little and I understand that their are people living in an urban environment that can’t keep up with the market-rate of housing. I’m one of these people them it would seem.

Never has it hit so close to me then right now. I’m glade that it did however. This is part of life and learning. And I’ll take it as it comes. In the meanwhile read this very interesting PDF about affordable housing in Richmond. You can’t expect people to make their rent if you don’t give them a fighting chance by raising their pay. That’s all I’m saying.
